Securing Heirlooms Tips
When you are responsible for clearing a home of its contents, deciding what to keep can sometimes feel overwhelming. Allow yourself plenty of time, stock up on basic necessities like snacks and water, and arm yourself with either bright colored sticky notes or bright colored painters tape and markers. The traditional blue painter’s tape can be hard to see in dimly lit homes so consider the bright orange or green versions instead. Before packing or moving anything, start by simply tagging items first. You might find that views will change from one day to the next and it’s easier simply move a sticker than the item itself. If there are items going to multiple family members, mark them accordingly.
Once you’ve thoroughly combed through every room, tagged everything you wish to keep, and, if necessary, received confirmation from other family members, you’re ready to either meet with a moving company or, if you’re the DIY type, decide what kinds of packing materials you’re going to need. Selecting, packing and physically removing family items from the property is a tremendous first step and should be celebrated! Our clients tell us that completing this step feels like a pressure release valve had been opened and it makes the next steps much easier.
